The inaugural Old Rugbeian Armed Forces Dinner was held at The Cavalry and Guards Club, Piccadilly on Monday, 30th November 2009 with some 26 ORs and wives attending a champagne reception and dinner in the Waterloo Room. The evening saw an opportunity for military ORs to polish their medals and discuss stories of modest bravery and sculduggery spanning 80 years of conflict. Whilst senior members supported the evening in strength, it was noted that a number of ORs are currently serving in Afghanistan and were sadly missed; it is hoped that they have a safe return and are perhaps able to attend future such events when they can inform us all of the modern conflict's highs and lows.
The Army saw the greatest number of attendees, but the Royal Navy, Royal Air Force and Royal Marines all had there place and the merriment of the evening's occasion was shared by all.
A theme that ran through all conversations was how busy today's armed forces are, how everyone knew someone currently serving and how everyone knew someone who had been killed or wounded. It is unfortunate to be in such a group of people, but one wonders how many in today's society know a serving or wounded member of our Armed Forces. It remains so important to remember.
